The American Iris Society announced its 2008 award-winning Iris in mid-July. Starwoman, an Intermediate Iris, captured this year’s Dykes Memorial Medal, the highest award for any Iris. Marky Smith of Yakima, Washington introduced Starwoman into commerce in 1998. It won an AIS Honorable Mention in 2001, an Award of Merit in 2003 and the Sass Medal in 2005. The AIS at their annual convention in Portland, Oregon in 2006 also honored Marky by presenting her with an AIS Hybridizer’s Medal.
